Patent

Invention Name: Hinge, Opening/Closing Mechanism, and Piano (Slow-Closing Keyboard Lid)

Application Number: Patent Application No. 2002-65849 Application Date: March 11, 2002
Publication Number: Patent Publication No. 2003-263151 Publication Date: September 19, 2003

Invention Problem

When closing the piano's keyboard lid, the goal was to achieve a slow and quiet closure using a rotary damper. However, the rotary damper could not be retrofitted onto existing pianos, making it impossible to implement a structure that would allow the keyboard lid to close slowly and quietly on existing pianos.

Invention Solution

The invention uses the following hinge: The paired hinge pieces 5 and 6 are connected to each other via a pivot 7, allowing them to swing open and closed. The pivot 7 is capable of generating torsional force around its axis and has its ends fixed in such a way that they cannot rotate with respect to the hinge pieces 5 and 6. When the hinge pieces 5 and 6 swing in the closing direction, twisting force is applied to the pivot 7, amplifying the torsional effect.
